Community Giving Back

Giving Back to the Community: StepUp Rangers and Families

We work very hard to teach responsibility and a giving nature through our learning programmes, but the best way to teach kids responsibility is to model it.

It’s for this reason that StepUp created the Ranger program. Teams of at least three student Rangers, with an older mentor or family member, volunteer together on projects that lift up the community around them.

A StepUp child benefits from volunteering in more ways than we can list, but here are just a few:

They learn that giving back feels good. The satisfaction and pride of a selfless job well done is a big motivator of good works, and will keep them giving back for years to come.

They grow more tolerant of differences. Volunteering to help others gives them the chance to develop relationships with people they might otherwise never have spoken to—people of different race, religions, ethnicities and income levels. They learn that people who are very different can be united by a common purpose.

They see the benefit of sacrifice. Giving of themselves to help another teaches them to see beyond their own needs and desires.

They realise that one person can make a difference. This can be a very powerful, very empowering experience for a child. They realise that they are capable of making a positive impact on another person’s life.

They develop a sense of responsibility. By volunteering, they learn how to make and keep a commitment, be on time, do their best, and be proud of the results. But they also learn that we are all ultimately responsible for the well-being of our own communities.

Encouraging volunteering like this helps us shape our students into enthusiastic contributors to their communities.

Graduation Certificates

Giving back is its own reward. Even so, we want to acknowledge the hard work and commitment our Rangers invest in their communities. Rangers graduate with a certificate and badge, either bronze (for one year of service), silver (for two years) or gold (for three), in recognition of their service.
